Birth of John

Elizabeth's pregnancy was full term and she delivered a son. Elizabeth's neighbors and cousins heard how the Lord had great mercy on her and rejoiced with her. Elisabeth who was barren gave birth to a son.

It was customary on the eighth day for the child to be circumcised. They called his name Zacharias after his father but Elisabeth said, "No, he will be called John."  They said to her, "You don't have any relatives named John." Then they made signs to Zacharias, how he would have him named. Zacharias asked for a writing tablet and wrote, his name is John.

Genesis 17:12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger (foreigner) which is not of they seed.

They were amazed that they did not name him after his father. Immediately after Zacharias wrote, his name is John his tongue was loosed and he spoke and praised God. Everyone there became afraid. They reported abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. Everyone who heard said, "What manner of child will this be?"

The hand of the Lord was with John. And his father, Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost and he prophesied saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he has visited and redeemed his people.
